» Benefits Outsourcing - Helpful Tips
While some companies do choose to have their various benefits outsourced with more than one company, there has to be a compelling reason to do this. In general, it will be much easier for you and your employees if the same company is handling all of the benefits provided.
However, it can actually be a great idea to have some of your benefits outsourced and some of them administered in-house. This is becoming more and more common. A recent survey reported that 60% of respondents used a combination of outsourcing and in-house resources to manage its defined benefit plan; while 86% used both to manage its health and welfare benefits program.
Many companies that provide benefits outsourcing still provide your employees with accessibility and service as personalized as what they would receive from your company's own HR department. It is common for these companies to administer a web page with complete information and access to account information and individualized information for all benefits administered.
They will also be responsive to your employees by phone, and offer print materials explaining benefits and answering common questions.
Many companies first entering the world of benefits outsourcing find that the costs initially are higher than they had expected. However, such companies often report that the costs gradually become lower after the outsourcing relationship has been established for two or three years.
Experts recommend that businesses expect outsourcing their benefits to require an ongoing process of evaluation and re-evaluation of the job the benefits administrator is doing. Since the goal of outsourcing is to increase efficiency and quality of the benefits that your employees are receiving, it makes sense to be constantly in tune with whether this is in fact the case.
