Assisted living facilities are regulated on a state-to-state basis. Each state has its own laws governing the staffing and operation of such facilities.
According to the census, about 6.5 million older people need assistance with daily living activities. As the American population ages, that number is expected to double by the year 2020. Even between the year 2000 and the year 2010, the population of people aged 85 and older will have increased by 33%. These numbers mean that the demand for and popularity of assisted living facilities is bound to increase.
The majority of assisted living facilities have between 25 and 120 units. The size of the facility is an important factor to consider in choosing one. Larger facilities usually have more activities and social events planned. Smaller facilities, however, may have their own advantages of more personalized service. In all facilities, the number of staff people compared to the number of residents will make a big difference in the care you will receive.
Fees for basic care in American assisted living facilities range from $15 to $200 per day.
When selecting an assisted living facility, the most important thing is to visit the facility and talk to others who live there and to the staff. Is the staff friendly, attentive, and kind? Are the other residents people you could see having as your neighbors? Does it seem like a nice place to live?
