HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. HIPAA's Title I protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs. Title II has required the Department of Health and Human Services to create national standards for electronic healthcare transactions. Title II also addresses the issue of security and privacy of patients' health information. HIPAA Title II requires that all healthcare providers follow nationally recognized norms in the areas of electronic records and patient privacy.
