One ohm is the resistance value through which one volt remains a current of one ampere.

A resistor has maximum working voltage and current that if exceeded, may change or damage the resistor by overheating or possibly burning it up.

Resistors can be used for door locks, timing circuits, remote starts, or to discharge a stiffening capacitor.

A series resistor can be used to regulate the speed of DC motors.
