  • Coils are made of materials such as wire, rope, hose, or cable.

  • The compressor on your refrigerator can overheat if there is a build up of dusk on the condenser coils. The coils will need to be vacuumed periodically.

  • A boiler coil is an element located in a water heater.

  • A transformer coil consists of a primary coil and a secondary coil that transfer energy from one electrical circuit to another by magnetic coupling without moving parts.

  • Evaporator coils contain Freon liquid over which the warm air from inside the home is passed.

  • Evaporator coils are part of an air conditioner or heat pump system that becomes cold when the unit is operating.

  • When an air conditioner system is on, air flows through the coils and distributes the cold air throughout your home.

  • Evaporator coils get their name because the Freon inside of the coil evaporates or turns into gas when it absorbs the heat from the air passing over the coils.

  • Coils are rated in sizes from 1.5 to 5 tons.

  • Heating coils are manufactured for steam, water preheat, reheat, or booster applications.

  • Cooling coils are used for chilled water, brine, Freon, ammonia, glycol, and other refrigerants.

  • An ignition coil is an induction coil in an automobile’s ignition system that transforms a storage battery’s 12 volts to the thousands of volts that are needed to spark the spark plugs.

  • An evaporator coil used to warm air is called a heat pump.

  • An evaporator coil that is not a part of the heating system is called an independent system.

  • A fan coil is an indoor component of an air conditioner or heat pump that is used in the place of an evaporator coil to change the refrigerant from a gas to a liquid or vice versa and blow air over the coils to cool or heat a home.

  • Horizontal evaporator coils are used for a furnace that is mounted horizontally.
