Data mining is the searching of databases (both online and within a single computer or mainframe) for repetitive threads of characters. Data mining typically has a negative connotation since it is used to gather information about individuals and how they spend their time online. But Data mining also has useful purposes, too, such as when medical professionals use it to find information about a set of symptoms or treatments that may be beneficial to their patients.
