  • When you experience a call from a telemarketer and there is “dead air” it is generally because the call has been placed by an automatic dialer. The representative may be on another call.

  • In order to avoid fraud from a telemarketer, always ask for detailed, written information that you can double check for yourself.

  • Request that a telemarketer give you time to consider their offer. If it is a scam, the telemarketer will typically either say the offer is about to expire or simply move on to the next phone call.

  • Asking for a call back number from a telemarketer does not always stop scam artists as they are generally prepared to give you a number where they have an accomplice ready to verify their call.

  • If you are contacted by a scam artist, contact the FTC to report the scam at www.ftc.gov or call 1-877-FTC-HELP.
