  • You will need a modem when connecting with DSL. Also, a computer (obviously) and a phone line complete the package. And you’ll need a DSL installation kit, including a CD and wires to connect your computer. In most cases, you can install DSL yourself, but most companies will send a technician to your home (for a fee) if you need additional assistance.

  • With Internet service, sometimes you get what you pay for. DSL costs more than dial-up service, of course, because it’s faster, more convenient, and more reliable. However, it’s comparable in many cases to cable Internet services. Expect to spend about $35 to $40 a month, depending on the company and on the package you choose.
