  • Do a home inventory to be sure you have enough coverage. The replacement value of all of the personal items in your home is probably more than you would guess.

  • You can buy add-on coverage for items that are not normally covered by a standard homeowner’s policy.

  • Take pictures of the contents in your home. On the back of photos note what the item is, where it was purchased, and the value of the item.

  • Video items in your home along with serial numbers. Give a description of the items as you tape.

  • Keep inventory lists, photos, and video tapes in a safety deposit box or some other safe place away from your property.

  • If you live in a flood-prone area, check with the National Flood Insurance Program regarding purchasing flood insurance.
