If you decide to go to a car auction do your homework first. Do not come empty handed. Before you get there look up the car of your choice online and find out what the book value of the car is. This will give you some idea as to what the bid range may be. The bid will always be below this however, but at least you will have some idea as to what to bid. The main point here is to know the value of the car.
Don’t forget when you bid, if you are the winner, you will not only pay for the bid price, but you will also pay 10% of the buyer’s premium, $45 documentation fee, and $50 smog fee. You will also be responsible for DMV fees. These fees are usually estimated. And you may have to pay sales tax on top of that.
Also, if you are planning to attend an auction, make sure to contact the auction ahead of time so you can discuss financing arrangements.
