  • Budgeting is the planning process by which an individual or a business analyzes specific periods of time to evaluate the projected expenses, liabilities, and resources that it will take to accomplish the financial goals that have been set.

  • Regardless of a businesses size or industry, budgeting will be apart of the companies financial planning process. Budgets give businesses the ability to forecast or project certain expenses, estimated sales, as well as plan for unforeseen situations that may occur. Budgets have given businesses a way to anticipate and plan for what lies ahead in all aspects of their business on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually basis.

  • Budgeting for businesses will usually include such things as payroll expenses, overhead expenses, accounts payable, accounts receivable, advertising, insurance expenses, operating expenses, forecasted sales, and any other area that will impact a businesses financial goals. Several companies have developed software for their budgeting needs that are specific to the type of planning that is required, or in some cases software that is sufficient to get the job done can be purchased.

  • Several of the financial areas listed above are variable and can sometimes be difficult to project. Businesses tend to have either and entire team devoted to the company’s budget or in some cases it is handled directly by the upper management. Small businesses owners usually play a big role in their businesses budgeting which allows them to be hands on and know the business inside and out.

  • For individuals, budgeting is great way to control their day to day finances which can allow them to save and plan for long term goals such as buying a house, children’s education, vacations, paying off debts, investing, or retirement. Individuals that budget and stick to it have a much better chance of achieving their specific financial goals.

  • There are several budgeting software programs available for individuals. These programs assist in the complete budgeting process making it easier not to overlook items that may have been missed otherwise. Most budgeting software programs offered today have the capabilities to link up to a bank, investment, or retirement account and provide real time updates on financial plans.
